Female students at York St John University today showed their support for the This Girl Can campaign joining together in the quad to encourage more women to get into sport.
Information taken from the Active People Survey in 2014 showed that when asked, 13 million women said they would like to participate more in sport and physical activity.
However, just over six million of them were not currently active. The research for this campaign suggested the main reason was this was because of fear of being judged on their appearance or ability.
The aim of the campaign is to celebrate active women and tell the story of ‘normal’ women who enjoy exercise, no matter what their ability. The website features stories from women of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds, sharing their experiences in their chosen sports. The success of England’s women’s teams – including the football and World Cup winning cricket sides – has sent media interest in female sport to an all time high.
The campaign seems to be working as recent figures demonstrate the video has been seen by 37 million people, and 1.6 million more women are exercising since the campaign was released.
YSJ students supporting this campaign will hopefully encourage more female students to get involved with the many teams accessible at the university.
