Students at York St John University organise protest against the Universities new ‘Restore Britain’ society.

Although the society was originally in support of Reform UK , their recent rebrand has sparked controversy.

In a statement from their Instagram post, they stated: “Finally the people of this country have a party that will strive to do what is necessary to bring Britain back to its former glory.”

However, the controversial nature of the society has caused other members of the University to speak out.

The YSJ Student Activist Network have organised a meeting in protest of the Restore Britain society, saying: “Show up to show Restore Britain they aren’t welcome at our university just because there is no longer a Reform society.”

The protests featured signs reading, ‘Racists be scared’, ‘Love Migrants hate racists’.

The Activist Network additionally commented, “Restore Britain is merely attempting to create a community of like-minded individuals on campus, however the way in which they’re going about this – particularly bypassing the Student Union in their attempted creation – has resulted in many students feeling unsafe.”

The Restore Britain Society have additionally claimed that the backlash is due to “The left feeling the need to smear everything they don’t like.” And labelling their critics as showing “A severe lack of intelligence”.

They claim the overall aim of the society is to ” simply to bring together like-minded peers. We study on a campus which is very hostile towards those with our views, so it’s only right that there is a space for us to have serious discussions in peace.”
