Serina Wiegman- England Manger

York City Academy graduate, Jess Park is on international duty in Turkey as England Manager Sarina Wiegman has given ‘reassurances’ about the team’s safety.

Park who was born in Brough, in the East Riding of Yorkshire, had been called up for the Lionesses’ World Cup qualifiers against Ukraine and Iceland.

The team play in Antalya tomorrow evening (the 3rd March at 5pm).

For the fifth year, Ukraine are unable to play in their home country due the war with Russia so Turkey is the substitute host.

Conflict started on Saturday when the US attacked Iran along with Israel, which resulted in retaliatory strikes across the Middle East.

On Sunday, Cyprus, which is close to Turkey had an Iranian drone hit Into a British RAF base.

Speaking to the BBC, England boss Sarina Wiegman said: “Yes, we did have reassurances. We are in close contact with the government and the people here that are responsible.

“Of course, you’re concerned about what’s happening in the world. When we think, or our government thinks it’s unsafe, we will go back. At this moment, we don’t have signals of that.”

Park and the other Lionesses reported to St George’s Park on the 24th February to start training for the upcoming qualifiers.

The midfielder, who now plays for Manchester United Women previously played for the York City’s academy before moving to the top flight of the Women’s Super League.

In 2017, Park moved to Manchester City and completed a loan spell at Everton, before returning back to City after picking up an injury later in the season.

Jess made her senior England debut in November last year and scored her first international goal just over a minute after being substituted on.

Jess was an unused substitute in the Euro final last year where England beat Spain on Penalties.

In September last year it was announced that Jess has signed a four-year deal to move to the Red side of Manchester.

Jess scored her first goal for Manchester United in a 5–1 win against the London City Lionesses.
