From Pitch to Palette: Lehi James is one of York’s hidden gems

Independent shop Lehi James in the heart of York city centre attracts visitors because of its mixed range of football, Formula One and rugby shirts, scarves and hats. In the store, there are also cosmetics and perfume from brands like Pink Honey and Mallows Beauty.

James Humphries, 33 from Wakefield, opened Lehi James in 2023 in Little Stonegate, York after his first shop in Hull proved profitable.

The meaning behind the name ‘Lehi James’ is a mixture of James’s first name and is a Hebrew prophet in the Mormon religion.

Following the success in Hull, James opened the shop in York due to the busy streets and his own childhood memories. “York is a lovely place; I like the vibe of York it’s a good mix between visitors and locals”

With the shop being a mixture of makeup and sports memorabilia, James has had to learn the ins and outs of the makeup world, especially with his Wife, Valerie being a makeup artist before they had their little girl.

Football shirts are one of the main selling points for the shop, so knowing which to stock is a tricky decision : “There are so many shirts to choose from! Deciding between ones that I like, which ones will sell and ones I can get in”.

Whenever you pop into the shop, you will always see James with a football top on!

Whether you are into Football, Formula One or Rugby, you will be spoilt for choice.

Speaking with James, he shares some advice for people who want to start their own business. “Do your research, have a plan and take a gamble – just be careful”.
