York City FC scored a 90th minute equaliser to win the National League Title against previous title rivals, Rochdale.
Fans rejoiced after Josh Stones scored the deciding goal in the 13th minute of extra time, winning them a place in the EFL Second League. After what was an unsure 90 minutes, Rochdale fans stormed the pitch, resulting in an extra 13 minutes which subsequently awarded York the win after a 1-1 finish.
This dramatic title decider was the result of both teams accumulating 212 points between them, with York only needing to draw for them to receive the promotion, while Rochdale now prepare for the playoffs.
“The disappointment was no other, absolutely unbearable. York deserved the win though, they played very well.” One supporter quoted. Another said: “Best ending to a game there’s ever been. Utter madness. As a neutral living in Rochdale, that was an absolutely brutal ending.”
After an agonising ten year wait to regain football league status, York FC waited until the last possible minute to do so.
