Is Hyrox the World’s Toughest Fitness Race?

Hyrox is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world.

Starting with its first event hosting 618 participants, the 2023/24 season saw 210,000 athletes competing worldwide.

In 2025, Hyrox plans to host 83 events across 30 global cities, with over 650,000 athletes competing.

Invented by German mass-participation event organiser Christian Toetzke and Olympic field hockey player Moritz Fürste, Hyrox can be done solo, in mixed gender pairs, or as a team across various age groups, making it accessible to everyone.

Hyrox has built a strong community, with events attracting thousands of participants and spectators.

The recent event in Glasgow drew over 40,000 attendees.

Hyrox has also become a social media sensation, with influencers jumping on the Hyrox bandwagon.

Founded in 2017, Hyrox consists of eight legs.

What is Hyrox and what makes it so physically and mentally challenging?

A Hyrox competition includes a variety of exercises.

Athletes run 1km followed by a functional workout.

This sequence is repeated eight times, totaling 8km of running and eight different functional exercises.

The stages are: 1km Ski, 50m sled push, 50m sled pull, 80m burpee broad jump, 1km row, 200m kettlebell carry, 100m sandbag lunges, and 100 reps of wall balls.

Every station in Hyrox requires athletes to dig deep showing constant precision and power throughout.

This pushes athletes to maintain high intensity effort throughout the event without rest.

The constant pace tests athletes physically and mentally, but athletes must ensure they stay focused and push through the constant fatigue.

True mental grit is revealed in Hyrox, the sport shows those who are willing to succeed and those who just compete, a sport that requires constant determination from start to finish.

This intense sport is often described as “a sport for everybody”.

But is it the world’s toughest fitness race?

Retired doctor, Celia Duff aged 70 from Cambridgeshire – known as the Basass Gran – has been crowned world champion in her age group. She told the BBC: “It’s about resilience, not giving up, and understanding the benefits of keeping fit and being kind to everyone else on the racetrack.”

Hyrox is designed to test every aspect of physical fitness, not just excelling in one area.

It is mentally challenging, combining aerobic and muscular endurance to push athletes to their limits.

Pushing through an 8km run and eight different functional exercises is tough, and that’s the whole point of Hyrox, it’s supposed to be hard.

This makes Hyrox a unique and brutal competition, even for the fittest athletes.

In a generation full of fitness challenges, Hyrox stands out due to its test of all-around athleticism.

Hyrox earns its title as the world’s toughest fitness race, redefining what it means to be fit.
