Students are being encouraged online to look for housing in the early months of starting university.

Unfortunately within York’s high volume of students, there is insufficient housing for those entering the second and third year.

Notably, York St John offers all first-year students housing through their built student accommodation

A second-year English and History student, Ryan Whitely reported that his rent will increase by £40 per week when moving onto a student house.

In some student housing contracts, students are forced to pay a large sum of money before the first instalment of student finance.

Jessica Macmillan, a history and war studies student, says: “I’ve had to pick up extra shifts to afford the payment of my house in June”

Nationally, the average student rent has risen to £563 per month, with housing in York ranging from £125-£250 per week.
