Breaking the mental health stigma

Approximately 1 in 4 people in The UK will experience a mental health problem each year. In England, 1 in 6 people report having a common mental health problem such as anxiety and depression any given week.

Mental health can affect us at any age and at any point in our lives. Matt, from Liverpool is the owner of a mental health blog where he discusses his mental health issues openly. He inspires those to break the stigma of not speaking out, especially with men in particular who sometimes struggle to discuss their feelings.

“I still have quite low self-esteem”

Many organisations in York such as, The City of York Council, York Mind and The Mental Health Foundation are working towards breaking the mental health stigma by encouraging people to use their services and talk about their condition openly.

Matt suffered from depression for ten years and couldn’t function mentally for about four years, he says, “I still have quite low- self-esteem, but it’s not something that affects my life in a major way”.  

Matt’s method of help was seeing psychologists and psychoanalysts which helped him understand his brain more and allowed him to get through his illness.

When on the topic of breaking the silence, Matt says, I’ve never been ashamed or felt like I couldn’t talk, but I understand why people are”.

Many people have different ways of seeking help when it comes to mental health. Most Universities have well being centres so they can help their students through any mental health issues they may have. This is the case for Holly Butteris, a student at The University of Surrey.

Holly suffers from a binge eating disorder and depression. She says,

“I was dealing with it poorly but i decided it was something i needed to address, so i now i do regular counselling sessions at my universities centre of well-being”.

In York, mental health is taken seriously and help is always available. One example is York Mind, who offer activities and peer support to a range of age groups throughout the year.

“Our facilitated Peer Support sessions provide a safe space for people to share experiences and develop coping strategies.”

York Mind also have a young peoples service where they offer counselling for 8-16 year old’s who are struggling with their emotional well-being.
