York City bounce back with win after unbeaten run ends

LNER Stadium

York City bounced back from the disappointment of losing their record-breaking unbeaten run with a strong 3-1 win over Eastleigh FC on Saturday.

The Minstermen had seen their impressive 25 game unbeaten streak halted earlier in the week at Boreham Wood.

They responded in the best possible way with a confident performance in front of the home fans at the LNER Community Stadium.

Eastleigh took the lead early in the 18th minute when Aaron Blair found the net with a close-range finish, putting the visitors ahead and briefly silencing the home crowd.

However, York responded then took control of the game with an equaliser arriving from Mark Kitching in the 28th minute lifting the atmosphere and giving the home side momentum.

Defender Malachi Fagan-Walcott then put York ahead just before the break with a powerful finish to complete the comeback in the first half.

In the second half, York continued to press, looking the more dangerous side.

Fagan-Walcott wrapped up the game putting a second away to make it 3-1, capping off an impressive individual performance. Keeping their promotion push on track.

After the match, Fagan Walcott joked that he could have scored more goals.

“I should have scored a hat-trick”, he said.

He said there was strong belief in the squad as they aim for promotion.

“We have that belief. If one goal goes in, we carry on, if another goal goes in, we carry on.”

The victory keeps York City near the top of the National League table, maintaining pressure in the league leaders.

After losing their long unbeaten run earlier in the week, Saturday’s result highlighted York City’s ability to respond under pressure and bounce back quickly to continue their strong season.

City only have nine games left in the season with a top of the table clash against Rochdale on the last game of the season.

To get automatic promotion York must finish first to avoid the disappointment of last season when they failed to make the play offs despite securing strong second place.
