Celebrations for the 80th anniversary of VE Day will be held from May 5th to 11th.
Victory in Europe Day celebrates Germany’s unconditional surrender following the Allies’ advances.
On this day in 1945, street parties were held all across Europe.
In remembrance of this victory, York will celebrate May 5th with red, white and blue lights along the walls and city Bars to commemorate the lives lost in the war.
Street parties in the city centre will occur from May 3rd to 8th.

York’s Library will showcase the archival history of York’s response to WWII and recorded interviews with Normandy Veterans from York on May 8th.
Additionally, the York Railway Institute Band and York Military Wives Choir will be hosting a concert at St. Wilfred’s Garrison Church on the 8th of May.

Into the weekend, a Cocktail Reception with York’s Celebration Singers, followed by a four-course luncheon inspired by a ‘Dig for Victory’ sourcing local farm-grown produce, will take place on May 10th.

The Yorkshire Air Museum will celebrate with an event called “We’ll meet again,” which includes wartime re-enactors, vehicles, and displays from May 10th to 11th.

A street party will also be held at the museum for all to enjoy.
