It’s International Women’s Week and York is celebrating through a wide range of events, from charities to art exhibitions here is a list of the best.
The York International Women’s week Facebook posted a link to an events list of online, hybrid and in person events throughout York to attend between March 2nd and April 20th.
York Minster is celebrating women in faith with the Hilda Heirs festival on March 9th from 10am until 3pm.
This event is free to attend and it includes multiple things to do throughout the day.
It starts off with worship at 10am recognising historic and current women in worship.
There will also be a market hosted by women in positions of leadership with attendance from Rachael Maskell, MP for York Central.
Finally the Minster have created a trail to following inspirational women in history who have connections with the Minster.
York Art Gallery is celebrating this year with a ‘Wall of women’ display in the Centre of Ceramic Art.
This includes a 20 minute talk and 10 minute Q&A session from curator Dr Helen Walsh at 11.30am on Friday 8th March.
Rowntree Park is celebrating with their ‘Make Space For Girls’ scheme, which won ‘best initiative to increase park use by women & girls’ Green Flag Awards in 2023.
Make Space For Girls is having a Rethinking parks for girls’ & women interactive session 7-8.30pm March 6th.
Abigail Gaines, who leads the project says that the project is important to her because she believes: “It’s essential parks are safe and welcoming spaces for women and girls.”
Gaines is celebrating International Women’s Day being a guest speaker at the Lord Mayoress’s event at the Mansion House as well as speaking for the ‘Rethinking Parks’ event.
York Women’s Counselling service is holding a charity quiz night on Tuesday 5th March.
Proceedings will be going to women in need.
The quiz starts at 7.30pm and tickets, which include a light supper only cost £10.
