Hinshelwood gets disappointing taste of National League as new York City boss

York’s new manager, Adam Hinshelwood, endured an entertaining, yet deflating first match as he oversaw the Minstermen lose to fellow relegation candidates Wealdstone.

York were beaten 3-2 at the LNER Community stadium, by the Stones, in a five goal thriller which saw Billy Chadwick and Max Kretzschmar score a brace each in a match including persistent rainfall, hail stones and even a moment of crowd trouble.

After Hinshelwood’s first match, against Wealdstone, he insisted: “There were lots of positives to take from the game.” He added: “The first half for me – we were on top, there was lots of positive play, working the ball well into the final third.”

Hinshelwood conceded that: “We weren’t quite at our A-game today in the final third.” This is something they will need to work on if they are to climb out of the relegation zone.

Match report here.

Formerly a player, Hinshelwood, took up an assistant management role with Hastings United, however it was short lived as he opted for a manager role at Sussex County League side, Selsey.

Worthing FC was the destination for his next role, where he managed the side for nine years over two spells at the club. Hinshelwood then left the club sitting 3rd in the National League South to take up the position with York City which has left him feeling: “Proud, honoured and thrilled.”

York City had so much hope at the start of the year, bringing in some talented players. The signings of Alex Woodyard and David Stockdale were the standout names last summer, although the Minstermen are currently sat in the relegation zone.

Hinshelwood has a large task on his hands after winning just two games in their last ten National League matches at the LNER Community stadium. This includes no win in five matches at home.

City face another home game on Tuesday to try and fix the woes, this time against AFC Fylde. The Coasters are currently three points above York after recently beating Maidenhead United in a comfortable 4-1 win, adding to the drama at the bottom of the table.
