Thousands of runners to take part in York Race for Life raising money for cancer research

York will once again come together next month in the spirit of camaraderie, everyone bringing their own personal story as they move forward step by step in the fight against cancer.

The Race for Life will take place at Knavesmire racecourse, where three races will take place.

The 10k starting at 10 a.m, the 5K starting shortly after at 11 a.m., and a child’s fun run will take place on 3 May which will allow younger participants to have a chance to get involved in this meaningful cause.

Last year the York community came together and raised over £130,000, funding vital cancer research and bringing us closer to life saving breakthroughs, through furthering these medical advancements.

Emily Joseon, who ran last year, said: “I took part in the 5k , and every step gave me the strength and confidence I needed to carry on .

“With so many participants taking part each year I knew I wasn’t alone , it brings me so much joy knowing that York is going to be holding this event again this year.”

This year as participants set off, the community‘s hope is that each step is fuelled by the same determination, with even stronger support motivating many in the fight against cancer.

The route itself reflects York’s enduring charm. The Knavesmire is mostly flat, with gentle inclines across grass and trails, making it perfect for every age and ability.

From experienced runners to participants with kids wanting to get the whole family involved this race for life is a contribution of hope.

“The energy is unmatched”

Another participant of last year’s race, Amy Malik said: “Behind every individual is a story, whether it’s a parent, child, friend who fought or is still fighting, everyone is in it together.

“On race day, the energy is just unmatched, you see strangers lifting each other up like family, that’s the heart of York and what I love so much about this community.”

The first Race For Life took place in 1994 and has become a national movement.

With multiple races taking place each year, this inclusive movement unites thousands from all backgrounds, with each city bringing their own energy and determination.

This all stems from the shared mission to beat cancer and race in memory of loved ones.

As Knavesmire floods with runners , York will once again unite with a shared commitment to raise vital funds, driving us closer to beating cancer.
