Foss Bank Junction works to delay York traffic

Foss Bank junction has been named the “worst maintained junction” owned by City of York Council.

Work has begun to improve the 27 year old junction connecting Foss Islands Road, Peasholme Green, Jewbury and Layerthorpe.

The improvements are a long time coming – the project initially began in 2022.

It is the City of York Council themselves who name it their “worst maintained junction” .

The Council are investing £165,000 toward the roadworks which will begin on the 23rd of February.

Full renewal of traffic signals include replacing all traffic signal controllers, traffic signal heads, detection cameras, poles and cabling.

City of York Council warns residents to expect delays, leave earlier, and urges cyclists to take extra care during roadworks.

The Council also stated lane closures and the installation of temporary traffic lights are expected to increase waiting times.

Bus service 8 will be diverting along Hallfield Road and Layerthorpe, while services 12 and 13 will operate via Heworth Green and Eboracum Way, helping to minimise disruption and reduce delays for passengers.

Despite the Council saying they work to limit disruption, a local resident says she has found the roadworks “incredibly annoying”.

“The temporary traffic lights add on 10 minutes to my walk to uni everyday” says 20 year old Lisa Cowan, who studies Graphic Design at York St John University.

Another student from the university studying English Literature, 19 year old Stella McDonald, says her commute into the city centre has become “even more of a pain”.

She lives on the junction in question and says roadwork noise makes her “struggle completing uni work during the day”.

City of York Council anticipate all work to the junction will be complete by the 29th of March.
