York Restaurant Week has returned for it’s second year, with lots of new and exciting additions

York Restaurant Week is a celebration of York’s vibrant restaurant scene in what would be a quiet time for businesses around the city.

With over 60 restaurants, such as Calcuccio’s and Pairings Wine Bar, taking part from 2nd March to 8th March 2020, there’s plenty to choose from.

The event this year is organised by York BID, and offers residents and tourists, exclusive offers with FREE downloadable vouchers for £5, £10, £15 or £20 set menus. Customers are advised to book ahead due to the popularity of this event.

Last year saw more than 20,000 people visiting York Restaurant Week’s website, with nearly 6,000 vouchers downloaded and spent in participating restaurants – meaning £77,000 of revenue was brought in by the event.

Nine of ten restaurants also noted it gave them new customers.

Chris Bush, York BID’s Business Manager spoke about the popularity of the event and what residents can expect in this year’s press release.

“After the success of last year’s event, we’re delighted that Restaurant Week is back with a fantastic variety of venues participating,” he stated.

“We’ve added a £5 voucher this year to extend the range of options. So diners can choose from offers ranging from a coffee and cake to a full three course dinner,” adds Chris.

“This is a great opportunity for those who work in the city to have an affordable lunchtime treat, or for families and friends to dine out together without breaking the bank.”

Supersonic Café

There are a few newcomers this year, like fitness studio and café Supersonic, located on The Stonebow.

The Yorkie spoke to Ashley Metcalfe, head chef at Supersonic Café about the week ahead and what the café offers.

“We are a clean healthy living establishment, with fresh local produce.”

Talking about what the cafe will offer this week, “We are doing a £10 lunchtime offer, now up until 5pm. You can have a combination of any three salads with a drink too.”

“I’ve been a chef in York for over 20 years now, so I’ve worked in a lot of restaurants over the years to do with this York Restaurant Week.”

“I’ve found there’s a lot of people in the establishments who wouldn’t have come before.”

Middle Feast

Another new addition to this year is Middle Feast, a middle eastern shawarma restaurant and takeaway, located on Lendal.

Offering a chicken shawarma or falafel wrap for £5, saving goers just under £2, it’s a deal not to miss. We spoke to a staff member about how they were asked to participate this year.

“I got an email to invite us to participate in the offer for this week,” she stated.

“I like to keep everything as local as possible,” she stated.

“Even yesterday the first day of the restaurant week it went a storm. We had 12 new customers!
