Lynne Stones, 67, from Great Ayton, has told The Yorkie how she escaped Dubai just hours before Iran’s bombing of the airport.

She had gone to Dubai “on a bit of a jolly” with her friend Denise since they had been to the city before and loved shopping there together.

Conflict has broken out in the Middle East with Iran’s bombing of Israel and it’s allies in the region following Israel’s air strikes against Iran killing Khomeini, the country’s leader.

Iran has bombed 12 surrounding countries in the Middle East, particularly the gulf states and Israel with many British nationals being trapped in the region as the airspace becomes unsafe.

“All this happened literally about six hours after we’d left” Lynne said, “We were totally in shock, there were no signs of it.”

“I had gotten home, and it was such a long flight I went straight to bed, I actually ignored the messages on my phone because I had no idea what was happening.”

“The hotel next door to ours very shortly after we left actually went up in flames,” caused by “falling debris after a drone was shot down”. “We were very lucky to get out.”

Denise has gone to Australia from Dubai and is staying with family until she is able to return.

“I loved Dubai, it was a fabulous beautiful place that has just been caught up in something dreadful that has happened among surrounding countries- I would go back though.”

“I was very relieved watching the news and seeing the people still stuck there coming back home, I was very lucky to get home in time.”

Others who hadn’t escaped Dubai prior to the attack are being brought back to the UK through the neighbouring country of Oman.
