Ringo Starr New Album Review: Unimpressive Return for Former Beatle

Ringo Starr new album cover

Rating: 1.5 out of 5.

Ringo Starr has returned with his twenty-second studio album Long Long Road.

The former Beatle is back to making country music, something that he is becoming familiar with as his previous album Look Up was of the same genre.

Although it’s impressive that at 85-years-old, he is still capable of making an album, vocally he is far from impressive.

It’s Been Too Long is a highlight, despite being very repetitive there are some catchy aspects.

Most tracks feature backing vocals from much better, younger, vocalists, so sometimes it sounds like he’s doing karaoke.

My Baby Don’t Want Nothing is a low point on the album somehow being dragged out over four, sluggish minutes.

Beatles Nostalgia Misfires

Choose Love is full of references to old Beatles songs, like The Long and Winding Road and Tomorrow Never Knows.

Nostalgia is his greatest tool as he must bring up the old popular songs as key selling points.

Despite all this Choose Love is one of the better sounding songs off the album and is a call back to his “peace and love” catchphrase.

Choose Love also uses some oriental instruments to great effect, reminiscent of some of George Harrison’s Indian-inspired songs.

The title track is accompanied by a partially AI generated music video which is full of references to his past.

It’s a shame that an artist of his calibre has joined the AI trend instead of hiring people to work on a well produced music video.

However, for some unknown reason AI does tend to attract the older generation so it’s no big surprise that Ringo is included.

To conclude, Long Long Road serves as a reminder of why the Beatles only allowed him one song per album.
