Is York prepared for an incident like Liverpool’s?

Anti-terrorism bollards

Paul Doyle was arrested on Monday after driving into fans at Liverpool’s Premier League victory celebration, Merseyside Police said. The Yorkie investigated how safe York is from similar collisions.

The 53-year-old man from West Derby has been charged with multiple offences, including GBH with intent. In the incident 79 people were injured including nine-year-old child.

A fundraising campaign set up for those affected by the Liverpool FC parade incident has raised more than £40,000.

York City Council installed anti-terrorism bollards to the streets of York city centre in response to an increase in vehicle incidents across UK cities. York City Council completed them in the summer of 2024 with security staff at each street’s bollards to allow access to those approved by the council.

Ben, who didn’t want to give his surname, a member of the security team on Blake street said: “Anyone that has authority from the council can get through. Blue badge holders, permit holders, and emergency services.”

With the upcoming York Pride festival set to take place on the 7th June Ben added: “When there are parades like that, they have extra security on the grounds. More people like us, and the police.”

Greg Stephenson, Chair of York Pride, said: “York Pride takes the safety of our attendees extremely seriously. We attend the city’s Safety Advisory Group (SAG) meetings, liaise closely with emergency services, and undertake counter-terrorism training as part of our ongoing commitment to event safety.”

The Council is yet to comment but City of York The Safer York Partnership’s priorities include keeping the York city centre safe and protecting the community against terrorism.
