How to Succeed in the Premier League: One Team That Did and Four Yo-Yo Teams That Didn’t.

In recent seasons, we have seen a few clubs bouncing up and down from the Premier League having been promoted or relegated. Four clubs that are somewhat famous for this are Burnley FC, Leeds United, Southampton and Sheffield United.

Since the 2021/2022 season, these clubs have struggled to stay in the Premier League for more than two seasons consecutively.

This season, Burnley and Leeds have both managed to get promoted once again into the Premier League after racking up 100 points each and finishing in first and second place, with Leeds winning the Championship title.

Though whilst Leeds and Burnley were having very successful seasons in the Championship, Southampton have been struggling to keep up with their opponents. Unfortunately for them, they are left at the bottom of the table in the relegation zone.

This season was their first back in the Premier League since 2023. Many football fans are predicting that Southampton along with the Clarets will return to each respective league by the 2026/2027 season, as they are both considered ‘yo-yo clubs’.

After being back in the Championship this season, Sheffield United have the chance in the playoffs to go back up. After their 3-0 win away against Bristol City in the first leg, they could be returning to the Premier League for the second time in five seasons.

One thing that all of these clubs have in common is that they fail to keep their position in the Premier League once they are promoted. Unlike these teams, Fulham FC have managed to not only stay up but do well.

They were once also stuck in a cycle of promotion and relegation, but due to a mixture of things, they were able to comfortably stay up. This includes the strong impact of manager Marco Silva, their build-up and direct attacks and clever recruitment.

Marco Silva had a difficult challenge ahead when he joined the club before the 2021/2022 season, and that was getting back to the Premier League and establishing a place there.

He succeeded in this by using attack-style, possession-based play as well as gradually bringing in some very talented players such as Andreas Pereira, Joachim Anderson and Smith Rowe- who transferred from Arsenal after seeing how much the other players improved under Silva’s management.

His ability to spot real talent such as these players is outstanding, and is a huge reason why Fulham have succeeded in remaining in the Premier League for three seasons in a row.

Hopefully for these unfortunate clubs, they will take inspiration from Marco Silva and his squad, and manage to find their way in the Premier League.
