This summer, our city will host six World Cup games at the York Community Stadium.  

The city of York will be full of electrifying rugby spirit this summer. For over a month, there will be many exciting games to watch, featuring lots of brilliant teams.

Whilst England, currently world number one, will not come to York, fans will still be able to watch some of the key matches. Canada and New Zealand- who place second and third in the world rankings – will be visiting the city.

You will be able to watch these games in person, as tickets are still on sale, or live on television through the BBC. There are many other thrilling matches to keep up with as well.

New Zealand is world famous when it comes to rugby. The Black Ferns are known for excelling on the global stage. They have won six out of the nine tournaments so far and took the trophy home at the last competition in 2022, beating England in the finals in a compelling 34-31 victory dubbed the greatest match ever.  

This tournament will feature Canada’s superstar and 2024 World Rugby Women’s 15s Player of the Year nominee- Alex Tessier at the Community Stadium in front of anticipated 7,000-strong sell-out crowds.

Tessier got her 50th international cap with her current team last year when she also aided Canada in their major win over New Zealand.

Canada has something to prove this summer. Throughout their whole history, the two teams have faced off 18 times, the Black Ferns having won 17 of their matches, and Canada only winning one.

Though it will be tough with New Zealand in the competition and their star, Ruahie Demant, 2022 World Rugby Women’s 15s Player of the Year. In the same year, she led her team to Rugby World Cup glory.

After suffering through three knee reconstructions after her debut in 2013, she bounced back in time to play for the Black Ferns in 2018. Demant is likely to prove an inspiration to many young players.
