It is that time of year to put away the sweater vests, and quarter zips and bring out the sun dresses and sandals. But what do you bring out and what do you donate? Trends come and go but looking good never goes out of style. This is the guide to summer trends of 2024.

With help from SparkToro, Madé Lapuerta’s, ‘Data but make it fashion’ Instagram account, and a deep dive into this years spring/summer fashion shows we can decide what to donate and what to wear this summer.

Colour Trends

The first step to deciding what is worth keeping, is to create a colour palette for yourself. If you are unsure of what colours best suit you visit this site. From there you can donate anything that doesn’t quite suit you. This will go a long way to feeling your summer best.

To incorporate summer trends with your own personal colour palette we will analyse trends from the big four fashion weeks (New York, London, Milan, and Paris).

The biggest thing to note is that neutral colours, and soft pastels were a huge trend in all of the big four fashion weeks. Nudes, neutral greens and browns and pale pinks, blues and yellows were a common theme. Riveting reds made a small appearance but a noteworthy one because we all need a spark of fire sometimes.

According to ‘Data but make it fashion’ the colour of the season, is butter yellow (think Kate Hudson’s famous yellow dress in ‘How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days’).

In conclusion, ditch the bright colours that usually make summer fashions and trade it in for neutral, simple colours with splashes of red to spice it up.

Pattern Trends

When you think of spring/summer patterns you think florals (florals for spring? shocking). We can all channel our inner Miranda Priestly for our utter shock that florals were popular on the runways. However, we can divert that disappointment into inspiration because a lot of the florals were centred around roses. No more tacky floral patterns, trade up for the elegant rose patterns.

Aside from the rose patterns it seemed that the most popular trend on the runways this year was minimalistic attire. The 90’s have been making a comeback for awhile and this years fashion weeks have proved that the 90’s are here to stay.

Keep your simple white tee-shirts, oversized leather jackets and pencil skirts.

Bold patterns are out and simplistic chic is in.

Summer Accessories According to Data

Lapuerta’s, ‘Data but make it fashion’ has analysed accessory trends from thousands of online articles and posts to help make your summer wardrobe the best its ever been.

The first summer accessory everyone needs is a good pair of sunglasses. If you’re looking for a new pair of sunglasses then opt for a vintage pair (we love pre-loved options) and Lapuerta says that vintage sunglasses have increased by 69%. If vintage isn’t really your style then opt for a pair of tortoiseshell sunglasses which have a +38% in popularity according to her Instagram page.

Tote bags are out and the infamous mini bags are back in. According to Lapuerta, tote bags have seen a -18% popularity with mini bags showing a +35% increase. The mini bag is not all, funky bags were popularised on the runway this year (see Loewe, or Schiaparelli).

Walking long distances? What do you choose a trusty pair of trainers or do you brave a pair of flip flops? Flip flops have shown to have an increase of 25% in recent months, with trainers +86% in recent weeks.

On the runways there was a lot of sculpted jewellery, and Dior brought back chokers with special attention to the coquette aesthetic.

Overview

Still unsure of how to spice up your summer wardrobe?

Short-shorts ruled the Milan runway. We saw this trend in Prada, Hermès, and Gucci. Toss your jean shorts and go for a refined trouser looking shorts.

Not a fan of neural colours? Swap it for metallics as this was popular on the Paris runways.

Still bored from florals? Leather, pom-poms, net, and fringed looks were a common trend throughout the runways.

As we look at the trends for this season we can only wonder what the fall will bring us. Perhaps burgundy will be out and fuchsia will be in. We can only hope this years trends will be as good as the next season.
