February 16th-20th marks the UK fashion industry’s favourite event of the year – London Fashion Week, debuting the collections for the autumn/winter 2024 season.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of London Fashion Week. The full schedule and all the designers can be seen here.
The first part of the bi-annual event featured ready-to-wear autumn/winter collections from established designers and many newer designers to look out for.
Starting off the week with Harris Reed and ending with Daniel Lee for Burberry, there are several top name designers. LFW is beginning to be a hub for up-and-coming designers.
In between Reed and Burberry were JW Anderson, Molly Goddard, Simone Rocha, Roksanda, Richard Quinn and Erdem are a few of the headliners who all delivered show-stopping looks.
JW Anderson- London Fashion Week 2024
JW Anderson talked about his collection saying it was a “little more psychological than usual for me. The intent was to combine the grotesque and the pragmatic and seek an aesthetic collocation”.
This collection indeed was on a higher level of understanding. It included details inspired from furniture pieces, lots of bulbous textures, ribbons, and playful proportions.
Molly Goddard
Molly Goddard‘s collection was influenced by her eBay wish list. The designer claimed that there was no real theme as for the designer “fashion is an element of humour”.
Lots of triple layers (sometimes even layering as much as five different pieces of clothing). Tule was seen to be a major trend in the collection as well as crinkle textures. A Western feel was vibrant throughout the show.
Simone Rocha
Simone Rocha’s collection, titled “The Wake” was held at St. Bartholomew’s Church.
It was Victorian Era inspired with outfits influenced by Queen Victoria’s mourning dress. The collection had a trademark on black looks, intricate beading patters, tons of sheer, and moderate fur details.
Roksanda
Roksanda debuted her collection at Tate Britain and drew creativity from the beauty of the human soul.
The collection was vivid with different shades of playful but relaxing colours, features of strong silhouettes, layers and invigorating textures.
Richard Quinn
Richard Quinn showed off a beautiful array of elegant evening wear with sprinkles of wedding dresses this season.
His inspiration for this collection was the Victorian era (alongside the late Queen Elizabeth II).
It included lots of calming floral patterns, emphasised curves with special attention to elongating limbs (a stature of high status in the Victorian era). Voluminous rose details, and beaded details that dripped in elegance.
Erdem
Erdem’s collection captured the affluence of opera singer, Maria Callas and the feminine divinity of Medea.
Floral and decorative patters shaped the femininity aspect. Marabou feathers, silk, and shawl dresses emulated the classiness of Mara Callas.
Erdem’s collection was a pleasant mix of theatrical elements and antique textiles.
Burberry- London Fashion Week 2024
Burberry closed off London Fashion Week 2024 Monday night in Victoria Park.
This collection was inspired by classic British style. Majority of the looks were in a neutral colour pallet from shades of forrest green to sandy brown shades.
Common trends included headscarves and the iconic Burberry plaid print.
British supermodel, Namoi Campbell stunned the runway in a sparkling charcoal grey strapless maxi dress which completed the show.
A great deal of the collection was a formal representation of traditional Burberry and what the brand ultimately stands for.
London Fashion Week is the UK’s largest fashion event.
