Bolsonaro supporters storm Brazilian capital

Supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro stormed the Three Powers Plaza in Brasilia.

Last night thousands of supporters ambushed the National Congress building, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court – causing major damage to each building.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s inauguration took place on January 1st 2023 after closely winning the election against Jair Bolsonaro on October 2nd 2022.

Bolsonaro’s electoral loss incited the riots as they attempted to over-throw the new government after falsely claiming the loss as stolen election.

Around 1,200 people have reportedly been arrested so far.

The attack shows similarity to the January 6th 2021 riots in the United States Capitol by Donald Trump supporters.

Bolsonaro has been staying in Florida since December but responded to the protest by tweeting that “peaceful demonstrations are part of democracy” but “invasions of public buildings as occurred today escape the rule.”

Multiple word leaders have commented on the situation and condemned the behaviour.

Rishi Sunak tweeted: “I condemn any attempt to undermine the peaceful transfer of power and the democratic will of the people of Brazil.”
