York City won promotion to the English Football League in the most dramatic fashion on Saturday drawing with Rochdale in a thrilling season finale.
Rochdale fans stormed the pitch in a massive premature celebration when Emmanuel Dieseruvwe scored in the 95th minute in an ill-fated attempt to break the Minstermen’s morale.
But City didn’t lose hope as they pushed forward looking for a gap.
The goal came 13 minutes into extra time which sealed the deal for York to return to the fourth tier of English football.
The York City fans celebrated in dramatic fashion after Josh Stones scored the equalizer with a pitch invasion which the Rochdale fans had done just minutes before.
The city was buzzing after the game with fans out painting the town red as all the local pubs were busy with York fans all celebrating their return to the EFL.
Previously York City were last in the Football League back in the 2015/16 season and after a decade away they make a spectacular return with 108 points this season.
Rochdale have secured their spot in the playoffs just two points behind them on 106.
In the playoffs Rochdale are also joined by Carlisle, Boreham Wood, Scunthorpe, Southend and Forest Green with Rochdale being one of the favourites to go up.
How will they celebrate?
The first idea proposed was a traditional bus parade round the city, however this was quickly shutdown by the Yorkshire Council and the Police.
A petition was created and it gathered 2,000 signatures very quickly. It called for the police and the council to reverse their decision.
Alternatively to celebrate their return the club has announced a party.
It is to be held at the LNER community stadium on Wednesday, the party includes a trophy lift, fireworks and a quiz the club has confirmed.
Sam Leach, from York City Supporters Trust, said: “Let’s put this parade on and make it happen because it’s memories that last a lifetime.”
After a decade out of the English Football League York City will be wanting to make their return known.
With promotion comes more revenue generated by matchday income and higher league distribution with revenues generated through matchdays and tv rights.
They will be looking to stay in the EFL by overhauling the squad and giving the fans a season to look forward to.
