Blueberry Academy: Integrating inclusivity into the workplace

Blueberry Academy helps young people with learning differences find a way into the world of work, and they’re looking for companies who can offer job opportunities to their learners.

Since Blueberry was formed in 2007 it has made a huge impact on the lives of young people with learning differences and disabilities. Whether that has been through educational services, or employability services.

Based at the Melbourne Centre in York, the academy offers tailored training and support to help individuals gain valuable life and work skills, building confidence for future employability.

April Watson, manager of Blueberry Academy pop-up store speaks to us about the work they achieve alongside their trainees.

Watch our full interview with April and Florence below.

The Blueberry Academy pop-up store is located on Walmgate and customers can find crafts, rehomed goods, photography, and seasonal decorations.

There are many business partners that work with the academy to supply employment for trainees. Such as York St John University, Choc Affair York, and Marriott hotel.

Mark Draper

Mark Draper, Manager of Blueberry Community Enterprise said: “The idea is to get people out into work, but its not as easy as we say. The pandemic put us back three or four years and all opportunities stopped.”

The organisation is appealing for more local businesses to partner with them to provide work placements for those with learning differences. Mark said: “The more businesses the better- they can give those with learning difficulties an opportunity.”
