York International Shakespeare Festival 2025

Back again for their 10th year anniversary is York International Shakespeare Festival.

Running from the 22nd April to 4th May there is a range of theatrical events taking place across the city.

The festival was established in 2014 with the aim of enhancing global accessibility to Shakespeare’s work and showcasing modern adaptations of the famous playwright’s work both locally and internationally.

In previous years, performances have been known to display modern social issues being faced across the world through the medium of Shakespearean stories.

York’s International Shakespeare Festival supports diversity and inclusivity, ensuring everyone has the chance to share and learn about the famous works of William Shakespeare. When purchasing an event ticket there’s an option to ‘Pass It On!’ where you purchase a ticket for a member of the refugee and asylum seeker community who couldn’t afford to attend.

Here is a taster of the events to expect:

Tuesday 22nd April – Henry VI Parts 1, 2 & 3; “I Am Myself Alone – 7:30pm @ Theatre@41

Witness Irwin Appel’s condensed adaptation of Shakespeare’s original play at the festival. It’s an interpretation of the famous three part series of history plays set during the time of 1455 and 1485.

Running every day to 26th April.

Saturday 26th April – A Midsummer Night’s Mischief – 2pm @ York St John University Creative Centre Auditorium
