England hero Ella Toone fires Manchester United Women’s to historic first FA Cup triumph

Having only competed as a professional outfit since 2018, Manchester United Women planted their flagpole firmly down in a statement of intent in an era of Arsenal and Chelsea dominance as they trounced Tottenham Hotspur 4-0 at Wembley yesterday.

Ella Toone opened the scoring with the pick of the bunch, a thunderbolt from outside the box just as the sides were preparing to head into the changing rooms for half-time. In the second half the Red Devils did not let up a Rachel Williams goal followed up quickly by a Lucia Garcia brace put the game beyond Tottenham’s grasp.

Manchester United who sit fifth in the Women’s Super League have had a campaign of mixed success. This historic feat beating out eight time winners Southampton and five time winners Chelsea on their run to the final will live long in the memory of the players and fans. They will be hoping this trophy can serve as an indicator of their ability to fight for titles in the coming seasons. England number one Mary Earps saying post-match: “This is what I want to do. I want to win, so I’m going to enjoy tonight after five years of hard work.” The heartbreak of last year’s final loss to Chelsea long gone from the England star’s memory.

Come the final whistle 76,000 fans witnessed the team lift their first ever FA Cup and the jubilant celebrations that followed. With the men’s team competing in the FA Cup final themselves in just a few weeks’ time back in Manchester it was a much different affair. The men’s team slipped out of contention of European football with a crushing 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at home displaying the widening golf in ambition of the two sporting projects.
