Woman dies in A1 car crash

Police are appealing for information after a woman has died and a man was admitted to hospital with serious injuries following a three-car crash at roughly 2:20am this morning.

The accident occurred on the A1 Southbound near Leeming Bar and involved a Blue Ford Fiesta, Grey Ford Puma and Black Land Rover defender. The road was closed for police investigation.

Around six hours later at roughly 8:05am a second accident occurred on the A1 leaving part of the road partially blocked for drivers heading Northbound.

The road was reopened at 10:52am. The passenger of the Land rover was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries however they were not believed to be life threatening. The driver from the Ford Fiesta suffered from serious but not life threatening injuries whilst the Ford Puma driver was uninjured.

A 22-year-old man from Malton has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, drink driving and drug driving resulting in death. He remains in custody at this time.

North Yorkshire Police has appealed for witnesses: “Anyone who witnessed the collision or who was driving along that stretch of road at around the time of the collision is asked to contact police”.
