Although York isn’t renowned for its music scene. There are a few hidden gems around the city which showcase local musicians, as well as others from around the country.

Are you looking for night out or just a quiet drink? Dusk is a must for a music lovers, with music constantly being played from every genre, monthly live music and even music themed original cocktails; such as the amazing Britney Spears, Phil Collins and Shannon Leto. Attending a gig at Dusk is an experience in itself. Whether you’re downstairs at the bar or upstairs jamming with the band, you’ll always feel part of the music.
Kennedys is another unique bar based in York which offers all kinds of popular music events. Sunday is Live Jazz and acoustic sets and on Wednesday Kell Chambers (a local musician) hosts an Open Mic night which has grown and grown in popularity! If you fancy a bit of boogie they have a DJ every Friday and Saturday night, playing everything from 90’s RnB to current dance/RnB. And if that wasn’t enough, Kennedys also have Sotano which is the Spanish tapas bar in the basement, which provides live music on a Sunday night and a Ruby Tuesday open mic night is the most popular from 9pm! And then to top it off there is also soul and disco music DJ sets on Friday and Saturday nights. Kennedys is a go to for any music lover. There really is something for everyone.
The Habit is a small, yet quirky bar in the heart of York. This is a great venue for up and coming bands and members of the music scene to come and perform. It hosts a great pub vibe but is also a very trendy place to be seen. With a cosy pub feel downstairs and an amazing roof terrace, with breathtaking views of the York skyline.
The Basement York is the biggest venue out of this list, situated below City Screen Picture house cinema. With a capacity of 100, this venue again hosts a mixture of different events and acts such as live music, poetry, comedy, and DJ nights. If you’re looking for more of a concert vibe then definitely give The Basement a try.
